bio

Paul Costello was born in Liverpool in 1960. As a teenager he studied double bass with Adrian Wady and taught himself guitar. From the age of seventeen he played his first professional gigs as a double bass player and performed extensively as a guitarist and songwriter - sharing billing with Mike Chapman, Martin Carthy, Nic Jones and other major acoustic artists.

In pursuit of his growing interest in jazz (especially the music of Ralph Towner and Egberto Gismonti) Paul studied for a Jazz Diploma at Mabel Fletcher College in Liverpool. During this time he gigged with the Les Bolger Guitar Ensemble, performed at the Wigan International Jazz Festival with Martin Taylor, and took part in workshops with Lol Coxhill, Derek Bailey, Han Bennek, John Surman and John Taylor. He studied further with Phil Lee in London and has worked as a professional guitarist and tutor ever since.

Paul has performed his own work in both the UK and in the Netherlands. He has recorded three CD's - 'Snaizeholme', ‘Solo Six and 'Seven String Guitar’ and 'Living Music'.

As a member of Living Music Paul is currently collaborating with electric guitarist John Loughran, Indian sitar virtuoso Partha Bose (www.thesitarist.com), American double bass player David Luvin and percussionist/tabla player Hamit Walia on a series of concerts and recorded performances.
